Giving back and thinking of others is a part of what makes a Girl Scout so great. Recently, Troop 681 wrote and sent a care package to 303rd Military Intelligence Battalion. In return, a flag was flown in their honor on the 24th of May 2012. The girls received the flag in the mail with a certificate thanking them for their support of the military. Troop 681 has decided to donate the flag to the council! Thanks and awesome job ladies!

Animal Birth Control Clinic Tour and Fun Day

Thank you so much to the staff at ABC Clinic Waco who gave us the grand tour of the clinic and showed us all the good they are doing for the animals in our community.  We are now armed with knowledge on how to prevent animal disease, overpopulation, and what to do if we see FERAL animals!  we can even tell you what that means.  Some of us are even on our way to our DVM certification as we learned all about the equipment and surgical tools used to spay and neuter our pets.  We even got a little silly trying on some of the collars!  We made friends with the clinic mascot, "Whiskey" and promised to continue our efforts to help the clinic get towel donations, detergent donations, and make rice sock bags for the animals to use post-surgery.  Thank you again ABC Clinic!!

upcoming meeting and event: August 9th

I hope your towel drives were all a HUGE success!! Show the Animal Birth Control Clinic how hard you worked and let's deliver the towels, rice filled socks, and detergents to the clinic located at 3238 Clay Avenue in Waco at 4pm on Thursday, August 9th.  As a reward for your hard work, the staff there will treat us to a tour of the clinic from 4:00-5:30pm where you will get some hands on experience dealing with animals and much needed service ABC Clinic provides for our community.  We will have a regular girl scout meeting at my house from 6-7pm to get us going for the year.
Bring to the ABC Clinic at 4pm:
all towels you received as donations
all detergents you received as donations
all socks filled with rice
materials and/or photos of your summer project showing how hard you worked
JUNIORS: Troop leaders will determine if your project meets the qualifications needed for you to earn the Bronze award.
When you go for the Bronze Award, you represent what Girl Scouts can achieve in their communities. And, of course, you want to do that in a way that’s fun for you—and for everyone else involved, too! Earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award involves a suggested minimum of 20 hours,
exploring your community, choosing your project, planning it, putting your plan in motion, and spreading the word about your project. The suggested hours help you think about your commitment to doing your very best with each step. That's different for every Girl Scout, so these hours aren't a rule, just a friendly reminder. You’re a Girl Scout, which means you will earn your award with courage, confidence, and character and make a difference in the world around you!

See you there!
Gwen

Community Service Project Underway

The girls have voted and have chosen to help our community animal clinics for their community service project.  We met Sunday and filled cotton socks with rice to be used as warmers for the animals following surgery at the Animal Birth Control Clinic.  We discussed the local laws regarding our pets' vaccinations, care, and treatment.  For the remainder of the month of May, each Junior level girl is tasked with organizing and implementing her own individual towel and detergent drive to benefit Waco's Animal Birth Control Clinic.  Each girl can choose where to do the drive, whether in her neighborhood, church, school, etc. and will be collecting towels.  All sizes are needed: bath towels, hand towels, washcloths.  They can be used, new, stained, torn, etc.  The only requirement is that they be CLEAN.  In addition, ABC Clinic needs donations of detergent to wash the loads of towels they use daily (any brand is welcome).  {I noticed Dollar Tree sells a bottle for $1.}  I gave each girl a posterboard to get started and encouraged them to use a drop box in multiple locations to facilitate drop off of the donations.  Please encourage their participation in this very worthy cause, it is never too early to teach them about doing good works for others!
The first week of June we will be visiting the ABC Clinic and presenting them with all of our donations.  We will then spend the afternoon learning all about what the clinic does for pets in our area.  We will view animal parasites under a microscope, observe animal surgery, help with daily clinic chores, love on some friendly animals, and get to be "vet for a day" in appreciation for our hard work.  The date will be announced shortly.
This Saturday, the Waco Humane Society, is having their annual fundraiser, Paws in the Park, at Indian Spring Park from 11am-2pm.  There will be lots of fun events and more information about how to take care of our pets.  I encourage each one of you to participate in this event if possible.
If you have any questions, let me know.

meeting on Sunday

We will have a meeting Sunday from 3:00-4:00pm.  We will be starting a project that benefits the Animal Birth Control Clinic in Waco.  Please bring a package of NEW men's tube socks.  We will be making heating "pads" that will help the animals when they have surgery there.  In addition, we will be visiting, touring, and volunteering there during the first week of June.  Please let me know which day of the week that your daughter can be available to participate.  It will be a great experience for the girls which will take place from noon- 4pm.  See you Sunday!

Meeting this week

We will have a one hour meeting this Wednesday April 4th from 6:15-7:15pm to work on our troop tshirts and our SWAPS (ask your daughters if they remember what this stands for).  Camp is only a few weeks away--April 21st!  If you took your tye-dye shirt home, be sure to bring it to the meeting on Wednesday because we will be adding something new to our shirts so they will look fabulous for camp!

Cameron park day

We had a great time Saturday and earned 5 new badges!  More info to come but you can see below that we learned about geocaching and even placed our own troop time capsule-which the girls decided we should visit and make better every year.
